A vision for the Future of Nubri: A HKU KE project
July 22, 2019 @ 8:00 am - August 2, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
This exhibition presents images from a recent combined field trip/outreach project to Nubri Valley in the high Himalayas of Nepal. The set of photos helps convey the remoteness and poverty of the valley to contextualize the impact of the outreach project which had two components: (i) a cataract clinic, providing a much needed and otherwise inaccessible service to this subsistence farming community. This enabled the people to gather from across the valley (5 days’ walk) in a single village (ii) to facilitate cross-dialectal discussions of potential orthographies, necessary for the successful introduction of a writing system, contributing to ongoing maintenance efforts for this endangered language. This is an offshoot of the Nubri Language Project (PI Cathryn Donohue).
The exhibition will be available for viewing in the G/F lift lobby of the Run Run Shaw Tower from 22/7 to 2/8/2019.
