We would happy to welcome a new member of staff to our department! Dr. Yoonsang Song’s research explores the syntactic and morphological representation of language, with a particular focus on how language is processed by second language learners and bilingual speakers. He uses various experimental methods including electroencephalography (EEG). Prior to joining HKU, he worked at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2017-2019) as Research Assistant Professor, and at HKU (2016-2017) as Visiting Assistant Professor. Welcome, Dr. Christophe Coupé!

We are delighted to welcome another member of staff to HKU Linguistics! Dr. Christophe Coupé received a PhD degree in cognitive science in 2003 from the University of Lyon 2. He then worked as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), until joining HKU. His research interests in linguistics cover language evolution and language diversity, especially at the phonetic level, and the application of computational and statistical methods to linguistic data. The Department of Linguistics is very pleased to welcome the addition of a new tenure-track assistant professor Dr. Jon Havenhill to our faculty roster this fall. Dr. Havenhill received his Ph.D. degree in linguistics from Georgetown university in 2018. His broad research interests include articulatory phonetics, sociophonetics, and language variation and change. Building on work from his dissertation, he plans to investigate the cross-linguistic correlates of lip rounding in the acoustic, articulatory, and perceptual domains. Welcome, Dr. Havenhill!

The Dept of Linguistics is pleased to announce the inaugural publication of LECT - an HKU working papers journal in the language sciences. LECT is an online, open-access journal of working papers by students at HKU whose research focuses on linguistics and language sciences. Through a simple peer review process, LECT provides feedback for authors considering further publication. Each submission is reviewed in-house by a scholar from the relevant sub-discipline at HKU.
